I’m standing in a small kitchen right now in Arvada, tape measure in hand, looking at a footprint that would make most designers claustrophobic. The homeowner wants the big-box store dream, but we’re working with a space that hasn’t seen an update since the Carter administration. After 22 years as a contractor, I can tell you that in a tight space, every 1/8th of an inch is a battleground.

The 'Pivot' Workflow vs. The Triangle

We’ve all heard of the "work triangle," but in a small kitchen, that triangle usually gets squashed until you’re tripping over your own feet. In tight quarters, I push for a Pivot Workflow. If I can place your sink and stove on 90-degree adjacent walls—an L-shape—you can pivot between prepping and cooking without taking a single step. It keeps the center of the room open for a second person to pass through.

One thing I always check before we finalize the layout is appliance clearance. I’ve seen more than one kitchen where the dishwasher handle hits the oven handle in the corner. If you don't account for those handles sticking out 2 to 3 inches past the cabinet face, you’ll end up with a collision every time you try to clean up. You need a 3-inch filler in those corners, or you're building a frustration machine.

The Scribe vs. Filler Reality

In many older Colorado homes, walls are rarely plumb or flat. When we’re squeezing cabinets into a tight run, homeowners often ask why we spend so much time on "scribe molding." Here is the reality: if I just screw a square cabinet to a bowed wall, you’ll see a gap that no amount of caulk can hide.

I prefer using scribe molding—a thin, flexible strip—because it follows the curve of the wall. For a cleaner look, we can "scribe" the actual cabinet frame, shaving the wood to match the wall’s contour. It takes more labor, but it prevents that cheap, gapped look. If the gap is huge, it usually means the templating was rushed. A beautiful mistake is still a mistake.

Storage Belongs Where the Habit Happens

I tell my clients: spend money where it changes daily life. In a small kitchen, that means vertical storage. If you have 9-foot ceilings, don't stop at 30-inch tall wall cabinets. That just creates a "dust shelf" on top that you’ll hate cleaning. Go to the ceiling.

If you want floating shelves, decide where they go before the drywall goes up. I’ve seen homeowners try to hang heavy oak shelves on toggle bolts later, and it’s a disaster. You need structural blocking inside the wall to hold that weight.

Also, watch out for the "Stuck Pan" syndrome in blind-corner pull-outs. Most of those wire racks are rated for maybe 20 lbs. You put a 12-inch cast iron skillet and a Dutch oven on there, and the leverage will literally rip the mounting screws out of the cabinet floor. If it’s heavy, it stays in a drawer, not a pivot shelf.

The Mechanical Reality Check

When you're maximizing a small space, you’re often fighting the house’s infrastructure. Here are three things I look for before we order a single cabinet:

1. Duct Friction: Everyone wants a powerful vent hood, but if your duct has three 90-degree elbows to get outside, you’re losing 30% of your suction. It’ll be loud and won’t move any air. Smooth, rigid metal pipe is the only way to go. 2. The Floor Load: If you’re dreaming of a heavy 36-inch professional range in an 80-year-old house, we need to look at the joists. I’ve seen 2×8 joists sag under the weight of those ranges. We often have to "sister" the joists or add support in the crawlspace to keep your floor from bouncing. 3. Toe Kick Heaters: If we’re taking out a radiator to make room for cabinets, we often use toe-kick heaters. Just know that hydronic units (connected to your boiler) need a much bigger footprint than electric ones. They can’t just go anywhere—they’ll often interfere with dishwasher plumbing if you don’t plan the cabinet base correctly.

Lighting the Work, Not the Floor

Light the work first. In a small kitchen, people often put one big light in the center of the ceiling. All that does is cast a shadow over the counter while you’re trying to chop onions. I center recessed lights 12 inches from the wall. This puts the light directly over the work surface.

If you have a sloped ceiling—common in some Aurora remodels—don’t use standard recessed trims. I use gimbal trims that allow us to aim the light straight down. It keeps the architectural look without leaving you in the dark.

If It Were My Kitchen

I’d skip the tiny custom cabinets that cost a fortune. I’d use standard wide fillers or extended stiles to get a custom look for 75% less. I’d also install a Point-of-Use (POU) water heater under the sink. If your kitchen is far from the main tank, you can waste a gallon of water just waiting for it to get hot. A small 2.5-gallon tank under the sink gives you instant hot water for dishes.

Final Thoughts

Small kitchens don't need more space; they need better thinking. Watch out for the "Toasted" upper cabinet—keep your kettles and air fryers away from the underside of your painted cabinets, or the steam will delaminate the banding in six months.
